Legislative Advocacy

We understand the importance of ensuring our representatives in government understand the unique needs of the I/DD community. A group of representatives travels to Albany annually (or advocates through virtual meetings) to visit local assemblymembers, senators, and New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) officials to advocate for the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We also work with affiliate organizations to bring awareness to important issues, such as inclusion in the annual state budget.

Self-Advocacy

We encourage, promote and support independence, which includes helping people develop the necessary skills to advocate on their own behalf. This group of self-advocates meet regularly throughout the Agency to discuss areas of interest that impact their lives such as current legislation, careers, helping create change in our community, as well as the importance of exercising their rights on a daily basis.
